Uganda – The Pearl of Africa

About Uganda

Known as the “Pearl of Africa”, Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa.

Emerging from the devastation of civil war in the 1970s and 1980s, Uganda has made significant steps in economic and social development, yet still faces major challenges. Families and communities struggle to access healthcare, education and other basic services, and young children often suffer disproportionately.

It is estimated that 48% of Uganda’s population is below the age of 15, many of them orphaned by AIDS and in need of help. OKWAGALA For Children is a small foundation trying to help. We currently support a few children in both Northern and Central Uganda.

Central Uganda – where we help

Central Uganda

In Central Uganda, we work with local Catholic parishes and schools. They know the children best. OKWAGALA receives sponsorship funds and then distributes them to help children in the Kampala Archdiocese, Lugazi Diocese, Masaka Diocese, and Kasana-Luweero Diocese.

Our support goes toward baby school, day primary and secondary, boarding primary and secondary, vocational training, and a few university scholarships. We are small – every gift, no matter the amount, helps keep a child in school.

Northern Uganda – a region still hurting

Northern Uganda

The people of Northern Uganda are still feeling the effects of the recent civil war. Many children have lost parents or been traumatised. We are trying to help, with the support of the East African Province of Jesuits in Gulu Archdiocese.

The children we sponsor there need school fees, uniforms, meals, and often counselling. OKWAGALA receives donations and sends them to the boarding primary and secondary schools in the north. We are just beginning – your support can help us reach more children.
